The ABCs of Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene and overall health go hand in hand. Ignore the hygiene of your mouth, gums and teeth, and you can be certain to invite health problems. Good oral hygiene can ensure long lasting, strong and clean teeth. Read on for more information on the basics of oral hygiene.

Our mouth is one of the most vital systems of the body. We use the mouth to ingest food, which is the primary need of body. Saliva breaks down food, teeth mash it up, every tooth doing its own unique job, and finally the food goes onward for digestion. Keeping the mouth clean and in good working order is essential to maintain the proper functioning of the body.

Since teeth are exposed to food all the time, they need to be cleaned regularly to avoid a build up of food particles. Plaque and tartar need to be removed by regular brushing. Unclean teeth result in growth of bacteria and infection, causing cavities and gum diseases.

Apart from regular brushing and flossing, it is also necessary to have teeth cleaned from a professional at least twice a year. This is because stubborn residues of plaque and tartar cannot be removed by brushing alone.

Food when allowed to remain in the mouth causes it to decay. This is the common cause for bad breath. In order to keep decay at bay, it is necessary to clean all parts of the mouth, including gums, tongue, and cheeks regularly with a toothbrush.

Massaging gums with a fingertip also helps increase blood flow and keep gums clean and strong.
